How To Clean Medela Nipple Shield
Baby Scales
-
Medela recommends that babies under 20 pounds be weighed by placing them in the basket of the BabyChecker. Generally, infants over 20 pounds would be weighed with the basket removed. The BabyChecker can be used for readings up to 40 pounds.
-
When rented, the BabyChecker includes a carrying case in the cost of rental. If purchased, the carrying case can be ordered separately.
-
Read below for tips, or refer to:
- instructions for use
Do you have the scale in front of you?
Is the baby's weight more than 1.102 lbs (500 grams)? Yes
No-if the baby weighs less than 1.102 lbs, you can use this scale, however, it will not lock the weight into memory. Some older scales will only lock in over 2.204 lbs (1000 grams). Are you using the scale with batteries or with the AC Adapter? If Batteries, remove the battery compartment cover from the bottom of the scale housing and correctly place the 6 "C" batteries. When the battery power is low, the display will show LO. If using the AC Adapter, push the small end of the AC Adapter into the receptacle and then plug into the wall outlet.
Is the scale on a flat and level surface? Yes
No - To level the scale; adjust the four legs under the scale until the bubble appears in the center of the Level Gauge. You must dress the baby in the clothes and/or blankets to be worn for breastfeeding. Press the "ON/ZERO" button and wait until a beep is heard and a 0.000 appears in the digital display and it shows CENTER ZERO.Do you prefer to weigh the baby in pounds or grams?
For grams - Select on the right side of the scale housing the gram measurement.
For pounds - Select on the right side of the scale housing the lb/oz. measurement.Did you place a cover or blanket on the basket?
Yes - Depress the "ON/ZERO" button again until you hear another beep and see the arrow pointing to "NET." You will leave the cover or blanket on the scale.
No - proceed to next question. Now place the baby on the basket, holding one hand just above the baby. Wait until the digital display stops fluctuating. When you see the "LOCK" arrow on the digital display, you will hear a beep. This is the baby's before feeding weight. Press "WEIGHT ENTRY"
Do you see where the arrow is next to "MEMORY WEIGHT?" This means that the baby's before feeding weight is locked into memory. If you want to keep a log of your baby's weight, you should write the weight down. -
It's displayed in pounds and ounces or grams and can be switched between these during weighing process by sliding the switch on the lower right hand side of the scale.
-
The baby's weight can be measured in either pounds and ounces or kilograms. Switching between grams and ounces cannot be done during the weighing process as the on/off switch is between the two weight choices.
-
The warranty on the BabyWeigh Scale is one year.
-
You may have to recalibrate the scale. Refer to the Service Manual for calibration instructions. If that does not work then Hold down the Before Nursing Button while turning on the scale, F1 will blink on the display, hit the After Nursing button a couple of times until F4 is on the display then hit the Reweigh button, the program should read H60 0. If the display already reads H60 0 the scale needs to be returned to Medela for repair, the scale most likely has bad load cell. If the display does not read H60 0 you will need to reset the display program. Press the Before Nursing button until the H is displayed, use the Weight Entry button to adjust the display to 6, the After nursing button to change 0, and Reweigh button for blank space 0. Scale program is then reset. If you continue to have problems, call Medela Customer Service to obtain an RMA to return for repair.
-
Using a 10 kg calibration weight class F or better, check the accuracy of the BabyChecker after each move. If the scale needs to be re-calibrated, it must be returned to Medela for service.
-
Follow recalibration technique using calibration weight found in BabyWeigh instructions. Using the calibration weight, check accuracy after each move. If weight is inaccurate after recalibration, scale should be returned to Medela for repair.
-
A 10 kg calibration weight, class F or better, is used to check the accuracy of the BabyChecker and BabyWeigh scales.
The BabyWeigh II scale requires two, 10 kg weights for calibration.
-
The dimensions of the BabyChecker are 5 ½" H x 12" W x 22" L. The unit itself weighs 6 pounds 6 ounces.
-
The accuracy is +/- 0.375% of the reading. The BabyChecker is accurate to 0.01 kilograms for infants under 10kg and to 0.02kg for infants weighing 10-20kg.
-
Accuracy is: range 0-6,000g, resolution 2g, and accuracy +/- 0.034% at 0 to 12 pounds, and range 6,000-12,000g, resolution 5g, and accuracy +/- 0.042% at 12 to 24 pounds.
-
The BabyWeigh scale calculates the amount of milk a baby consumes during breastfeeding, simply by weighing baby before and after the feeding.
-
When in storage, do not put anything on the tray. Keep the unit in a cool, dustless and dry environment and remove batteries during extended storage.
-
Dimensions 7 1/2" H x 13" W x 22" L and actual unit weight is 10 pounds.
-
The Transformer for the BabyWeigh scale is 9 Volts DC.
-
The BabyChecker is powered by 6 AA batteries, which powers the unit for approximately 200 hours. This scale does not use a transformer.
-
Six "C" batteries run unit for approximately 1,000 hours or the scale can be powered by an AC adapter.
-
You will not be able to lock in weight if the baby weighs less than 1.102 lbs (500 grams) or more than 24 lbs (12,000 grams). Many people try to test the unit before using it with a baby, but if they choose an object under 1.102 lbs (500 grams), the weight will not lock in to proceed.
Bra Pads
-
Medela disposable bra pads are made of super absorbent materials that prevent leakage and maintain dryness. A soft layer keeps moisture away from the breast for added comfort. Includes a leak-resistant pocket and extra liner that provide added protection. Individually wrapped for hygiene and convenience.
-
Medela washable bra pads can be machine washed warm with like colors. Tumble dry.
Breast Milk
-
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows mothers flying with, and without, their child to bring breast milk in quantities greater than 3 ounces as long as it is declared for inspection at the security checkpoint. Please check the TSA website for the most up-to-date information regarding restrictions.
-
Thaw milk overnight in the refrigerator, or hold the bottle under warm running water until thawed. You can also place the sealed container in a bowl of warm water for 20 minutes to bring it to body temperature. Do not let the water reach the level of the container cap.
Thawed milk is safe in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
CAUTION: Never microwave breast milk. Microwaving can cause severe burns to baby's mouth from hot spots that develop in the milk during microwaving. Microwaving can also change the composition of breast milk.
-
- You can safely store your breast milk for up to 10 hours* with Pump In Style Advanced and Freestyle breast pump cooler bags.
- Direct exposure to the sun, like leaving the cooler in a car, severely reduces the cooling effectiveness.
- Breast milk is safe stored in a cooler at/or below 59 degrees for up to 24 hours.
- The liquid inside the cooling elements is water with food grade dye. The liquid is non-toxic.
- Medela does not have recommendations for storing breast milk with dry ice. Consult a lactation consultant or healthcare provider for further information.
*When ice pack is frozen solid
-
In the past it was thought that mothers needed to make more and more milk as their babies grew. Scientists now know that a healthy milk supply remains fairly constant over the six (6) months of exclusive breastfeeding. Your baby will take the amount he needs.
During the early weeks, babies eat very frequently and grow very quickly. By day 10-14, babies should regain any weight they lost after birth. For the next few months babies will gain about an ½ ounce to 1 ounce a day.
Around three (3) to four (4) months, a breastfed baby's rate of grown begins to slow down. Your milk supply will continue to satisfy the baby until it is time to introduce solids at 6 months.
Be the end of the first week of life, women who are breastfeeding one baby normally make between 19 to 30 ounces of milk each day. Infants between one (1) and six (6) months of age normally drink an average of 19 to 30 ounces a day.
An average size "meal" for a baby is between three (3) to five (5) ounces of breastmilk. Formula is harder to digest and less well absorbed. Formula fed babies may need larger feeds. Consult your healthcare professional for advice.
-
Rarely, some mothers notice their defrosted breastmilk has a soapy taste or odor. This is due to lipase, an enzyme, which helps to digest the fat content of the breastmilk. If this occurs, scald the breastmilk (do not bring to a boil) on a stove until tiny bubbles appear along the sides of the pan; do this before freezing. The scalding process will neutralize the enzyme, preventing the soapy taste or smell.
Breast Milk Bottles
-
Medela does not suggest the use of bottle liners as anything placed into the bottle can interfere with the valve assembly causing lack of suction. If you wish to use a bottle liner, pump into Medela bottles and then pour the collected breast milk into the bottle liner.
-
Calma has been designed to be used with Medela's bottles and containers. We have not done testing on other manufacturer's containers. You may find that you can thread Calma onto other bottles but you may find that this combination may leak or cause other issues. We do not recommend using Calma with any other manufacturer containers.
-
Calma has been designed to be exclusively used with breast milk and as such we cannot attest to Calma being used with other food.
-
Cleaning & Care
Prior to first use and after each use:Disassembly
- Remove Calma from bottle by turning counter clockwise.
- Press base down.
- Lift nipple from top and remove silicone nipple.
Cleaning
It is important to clean Calma after every feed:
- Rinse all separated parts in cool water to remove breastmilk.
- Wash all separated parts in warm, soapy water.*
- Rinse all separated parts with clear water.
- Allow all separated parts to air dry in a clean area.
Note: You can also wash all separated parts on top rack of dishwasher.
*It is not recommended to use a bottle brush with Calma.
CAUTION: Do not leave feeding parts in direct sunlight or heat, as this may weaken or damage parts.
Sanitizing
- In addition to cleaning, Calma can be sanitized once per day by boiling:
- Separate all parts.
- Choose a pot that is large enough so parts. DO NOT rest on the sides or bottom while boiling.
- Fill the pot with water and bring to a boil.
- Carefully drop parts into boiling water, and boil for 10 minutes.
- Gently remove parts from water with tongs and place on a clean surface.
- Allow all separated parts to air dry in a clean area.
Medela's Quick Clean™ Micro-Steam™ bag can be used as an alternate to boiling. To locate a Medela retailer visit www.breastfeedingnationalnetwork.com.
Storing Parts
Make sure all parts are completely dry before storing. When parts are not in use, put in clean plastic bag or store in a container with a lid. Alternatively, the parts can be wrapped in clean paper or cloth towel. Do NOT store wet or damp parts.
-
- It is normal for pumped milk to vary in color and consistency depending on your diet. Stored milk will separate into layers and the cream will rise to the top. Gently swirl (don't shake) the bottle to mix the milk layers.
- Avoid adding freshly pumped milk to already cooled milk. You can add small amounts of cooled breast milk to the same refrigerated container throughout the day.
- Pumped milk may be added to frozen milk provided it is first chilled and the quantity is less than what is frozen.
- Store your milk in Medela's BPA-free breast milk collection bottles or in storage bags specifically designed for breast milk, such as Medela's BPA-free Pump & Save™ bags.
- Freeze milk in two (2) to four (4) ounce portions. Small amounts thaw more quickly. You will waste less milk this way. Be sure to leave some extra room at the top of the container so the bottle or bag will not overflow when freezing or thawing.
- Seal containers tightly. Write the date on a piece of tape and place on the bag or bottle. Use the oldest milk first.
- If you do not plan to use the milk within a few days, freeze it right away in the coldest section of your freezer.
To help prevent accidental leaks:
- Ensure that the zipper on the bag closed properly.
- If milk is trapped in the zipper, attempt to clean out the milk. Milk in the zipper may expand during freezing, causing a potential leak.
- Handle bags with care once frozen. Be careful not to drop bags or have bags bang together.
- Store bags in the upright standing position to prevent damage. Do not store bags lying flat or stacked on top of each other.
-
- Place newest bottles or bags of breastmilk in the tray just behind the "IN" arrow, naturally rotating bottles or bags already in the tray toward the "OUT" arrow.
- When ready to feed, remove bottle or bag from the side of the tray with the "OUT" arrow.
- Arrows remind the person feeding baby that the older breastmilk is used first to help prevent wasted/spoiled milk.
-
Cleaning
- Prior to first use, bring water to boil then place lids & bottles in boiling water for 10 minutes.
- For regular cleaning, all components may be washed on top rack of dishwasher. Labeling lids and breast milk bottles may be sanitized in boiling water for 10 minutes. To hand wash, rinse in cool water to remove breast milk, wash in warm soapy water and rinse with clear water. Air dry in clean area and store when not in use. Do NOT store wet or damp parts. Labeling lids and breast milk bottles may also be sanitized using a Quick Clean™ Micro-Steam™ bag.
Safety
- Always test temperature of breast milk before feeding to your baby.
- Always inspect the bottle, nipple and other components before and after each use.
- To prevent possible choking hazard, test strength of nipple by pulling on bulb portion. If nipples appear cracked or torn, discontinue use immediately.
- Infants must not be bottle fed without adult supervision.
- Do not allow child to walk or run with bottle.
- Do not let child take bottle to bed or self-feed for long periods of time.
- Do not attempt to enlarge the nipple hole.
- Nipples should not be used as pacifiers.
- IMPORTANT: Plastic bottles and component parts become brittle when frozen and may break when dropped. Also, bottles and component parts may become damaged if mishandled, e.g. dropped, over-tightened, or knocked over. Take appropriate care in handling bottles and components. Do not use the breast milk if bottles or components become damaged.
-
Calma is compatible with all Medela containers, including the Colostrum containers, 80 ml, 5 oz and 8 oz bottles.
-
Each silicone nipple is stamped with an "S" for Slow-flow or an "M" for Medium-flow.
Wide base slow flow 0-4 months.
Wide base medium flow 4-12 months.
-
Medela breast milk bottles are made of FDA food contact grade polypropylene. Medela bottles are BPA-Free and designed for safe feeding and long-term storage of breast milk.
Polypropylene has a recycle number of 5 or PP stamped into the plastic item. Medela only uses new, virgin materials in manufacturing of all products.
-
Multiple nipple sizes are not required as the baby controls the flow of milk through vacuum. The baby will apply more or less vacuum to Calma as its need for milk changes throughout breastfeeding duration.
Breast Shells
-
Before first use every day
SoftShells™ should be sanitized once a day. For both Inverted Nipple and Sore Nipple Kits.If you have just used the SoftShells, the foam inserts must be cleaned separately before sanitizing. Squeeze the milk out of the foam, then rinse them twice with clean cold water. Dry them by squeezing between a clean cloth or paper towel. Separate and place the silicone back and dome in a small pan filled with cold water. Distilled water is recommended. Bring the water to a boil and allow it to continue boiling for approximately 10 minutes. Drain off the water and place parts on a clean cloth to dry.
For Quicker Cleaning
Medela offers Quick Clean™ Micro‑Steam™ bags for daily kit disinfection and Quick Clean wipes for cleaning before and after each pumping session. Shells and backs can be put in the top rack of a dishwasher or an autoclave. Do not place foam inserts in a dishwasher, Quick Clean Micro-Steam or autoclave.
Between uses during the day
If you are leaking, special care must be taken to avoid the buildup of dried breast milk on the shell parts and in the foam inserts. If the foam inserts become saturated, separate the shells, backs and inserts. The shells and backs should be washed with a mild soap or detergent in warm water, rinsed thoroughly in cold water and dried. Squeeze the milk out of the foam, then rinse them twice with clean cold water. Dry them by squeezing between a clean cloth or paper towel.
-
Only wear breastshells during waking hours. The reason that you would only wear them during the day is so that you do not have to worry about lying on them or having them shift. If they shift they could apply pressure to the wrong area. If you are awake, you will know if they have moved out of place or if the pressure is too much and be able to adjust them.
If using the SoftShells, do not feed the milk collected in the foam insert to the baby. Discard this milk.
For inverted nipples, begin wearing the breast shells during the last couple of weeks of pregnancy (contact your healthcare provider before pre-natal use). Continue to wear them after the baby is born between feedings, until your baby latches on to the breast without difficulty.
For sore nipples, breast shells can be worn continuously between breastfeeding sessions.
-
TheraShell backings are made of soft, flexible silicone backs and include both backings for sore and inverted nipples. The domes are made of polypropylene.
SoftShells are sold with only one type of backing, either sore or inverted. The SoftShell backings are also made of soft, flexible silicone backs, but have a more flattering contour under your clothing.

The new 105° opening angle and oval shape of the PersonalFit Flex breast shields allows more flexibility for mom to position the shield in different ways while she pumps, based on what's comfortable for her. When let-down occurs, mom's milk ducts get bigger – the new shape and angle allows the milk to flow more freely. Changing the opening angle of the flange from 90 degrees to 105 degrees made a difference; it better matched the contour of the breast and reduced compression of the milk ducts, which allows milk to flow more freely through them. This change resulted in increased volume of milk expressed during a pump session - 11.8 percent more overall on average. The 11.8 percent is the average but every mom's personal experience will differ.
-
The PersonalFit Flex Breast Shields should be washed and sanitized prior to first use. They should continue to be washed after each use and sanitized once daily. Cleaning instructions for the PersonalFit Flex Breast Shields are the same as the cleaning instructions for your other breast pump parts that come in contact with your breast or breast milk; please refer to the breast pump instructions for use for detailed cleaning instructions.

Medela breastmilk bottles and all our products that come in contact with breastmilk are and always have been 100 percent BPA-Free. Medela breastmilk bottles, storage containers, feeding products and breast pump kits are made with polypropylene. All existing research maintains that polypropylene is safe.

No. Although your Freestyle Flex Breast Pump may seem to physically "fit" the connectors from Symphony or Pump in Style Advanced, they are NOT compatible.
Freestyle Flex is only compatible with Medela's PersonalFit Flex™ Connector. Our PersonalFit Flex Connectors create a closed system, designed to prevent milk back-up into tubing. Use with other connectors could cause irreversible damage to your breast pump. Additionally, if using a non-compatible connector, you may experience vacuum levels outside of our clinically safe vacuum ranges.
-
Please check your instruction manual for complete cleaning directions. Before use, ensure that the connectors and tubing are completely dry. Tubing should be hung to dry - do not dry tubing by running the pump with wet tubing connected. Pump operation with wet or moist tubing can lead to irreversible damage to the pump.

Freestyle Flex's tubing and power adaptor were developed exclusively for Freestyle Flex. Only PersonalFit Flex™ Breast Shields and Connectors should to be used with Freestyle Flex.

-
Prior to each use:
1. Disassemble the PersonalFit™ breastshield, pump body, valve, membrane and bottle. Note: All parts are to be disassembled and washed separately for the pump to function efficiently.
2. Wash remaining parts in dishwasher or in soapy water and rinse well.
3. Air dry parts on clean towel and cover when not in use.
Under normal use, the pump handle and diaphragm/stem only need to be cleaned periodically or when it is apparent they have become soiled. Do not remove small white o-ring from stem.
Do not use with Quick Clean™ Micro-Steam™ bags. Wash only according to instructions above or included in the Harmony Manual Breastpump Instructions for Use.
-
Yes, Harmony® is now even more effective than before! This is thanks to the PersonalFit Flex™ breast shield, that is clinically proven1 to provide more milk and empty the breast better compared to the use of a traditional breast shield. Its unique combination of a 105-degree opening angle, soft rim and oval shape help reduce pressure on your milk ducts, resulting in better milk flow and an overall more comfortable experience.
Medela Baby Pacifiers
-
There is scientific evidence that shows suckling on a pacifier helps to reduce babies' feelings of discomfort during a painful procedure.¹ When your baby needs an immunization or a blood sample taken, try to offer the pacifier during the procedure.
When your baby starts teething, suckling can help relieve the stress of the pain your little one feels but doesn't understand. However, if your baby starts to bite holes into the pacifier, offer a teether to chew on instead. Teethers can be helpful to relieve some of the discomforts of gum pain.
Babies can experience pain when they have an ear infection. There has been some evidence that the use of a pacifier could increase the risk of ear infections – acute otitis media (AOM). Suckling on a pacifier may create a pressure difference that prevents fluid from draining through the tube that connects the middle ear to the back of the nose and throat. This could lead to a bacterial infection. If your baby has frequent ear infections, it's therefore recommended to reduce or eliminate the use of a pacifier beyond six months of age to help avoid a possible recurrence of AOM.²

Gas and colic are two different phenomena.
If babies swallow a lot of air when they are sucking on a pacifier, the air in their stomach could cause discomfort, referred to as gas. But this does not occur frequently.
The cause for colic is still unknown, but there are some theories such as an immature digestive system, lactose intolerance, allergies, or changes in the normal bacteria of their digestive system.1 Swallowing additional air during feeding can aggravate the situation. It is often difficult to calm babies during a colic episode, they cry intensely and long, often with clenched fists and curled up legs.
Doctors often diagnose infant colic based on the 'rule of three' ¹,²
- crying for more than three hours per day,
- more than three days per week, and
- persists for three weeks in a row or longer.
Symptoms usually start to improve around 10–12 weeks.
One tip to help soothe your baby is to offer a pacifier.2 For many babies, suckling can be soothing and helps them calm their emotions.

Yes, pacifiers can be used from birth. At Medela Baby we designed our NEWBORN pacifiers specifically for newborn babies.
If you are breastfeeding, research has shown that pacifier use in healthy breastfeeding infants, started from birth or after lactation is established, does not significantly affect the prevalence or duration of exclusive and partial breastfeeding up to four months of age.¹
However, you may prefer to first offer the pacifier when you and your baby are already comfortable with breastfeeding.
Read our article 'When and how to introduce pacifiers to babies?' for more information.

All Medela Baby pacifier teats are orthodontic as they have been developed using criteria defined by speech-language pathologists.¹ They have a symmetrical teat and a thin neck.
- The thin neck teat allows lip contact and minimizes the space between a baby's upper and lower jaw.
- A flat-shaped teat that takes up less space and the flexible silicone allows for increased free movement of the tongue.

Medela Baby pacifiers are made without BPA.
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical component of polycarbonate (PC) plastics and can be used in packaging and containers that come in contact with food products. It can also be used in the linings of food and beverage cans and metal jar lids. Under certain circumstances, it can leach from the material.
This can occur when the container is used for heating food in the microwave, keeping food warm over long periods or when there are cracks, scratches, or damage to the material surface.
There are concerns about the influence of BPA on the hormone balance of infants and small children, which is why all Medela Baby pacifiers are made without materials that contain BPA. -
Medela Baby products are made without BPS and plasticizers.
Bisphenol S (BPS) is similar to BPA. It can be used in the production of plastic containers and can also be found in food and beverage can linings and various paper products. It appears to have the same health risks as BPA, with concerns about its influence on the hormone balance of infants and small children, which is why all Medela Baby pacifiers are made without materials that contain BPS and BPA.
Plasticizers, also known as phthalates, are used in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics to improve the flexibility and durability of the material. This chemical can also leach out of the product. Some plasticizers have caused concerns about the influence on hormones in children and adults. That is why we specifically use only phthalate-free PVC in our products.
-
No, the limited and responsible use of a pacifier should not cause problems with misaligned teeth. Pacifier use should be limited to less than six hours per day.¹ Choose a pacifier shape that supports oral development, usually signaled by the word 'orthodontic'.
Limiting the hours of daily use and early weaning from a pacifier can help prevent misaligned teeth¹. Weaning a baby from a pacifier can begin as early as 6 months. Each child's mouth and teeth develop differently. The use of pacifiers for children older than 24 months should be a decision made by each parent, based on consultation with a medical or dental health care provider. At the latest, weaning should start by 36 months² as recommended by pediatric dentists.
All Medela Baby pacifiers are orthodontic and designed to help support the natural movement of mouth muscles. The attributes for this are:³
- thin neck teat – minimizes the space between the upper and lower jaw
- flat teat – takes up less space in the mouth allowing for more tongue movement
- flexible and elastic teat – allows for additional tongue movement
- lightweight – minimizes the work of the facial muscles
- ergonomically shaped shield – to fit the contour of the face and prevent pressure points

Medela Baby pacifier holders can be used for all Medela Baby pacifiers and a large majority of other pacifiers. Wrap the string around the ring or in the knob hole of the pacifier. Do not attach the string to the holes in the shield.
-
No, Medela Baby only uses food-safe inks that are completely harmless for babies, even if they would happen to scrape them off with their teeth.

There is currently no evidence from research to support that the use of a pacifier can help babies with reflux,¹ even though it is mentioned sometimes in articles as a possible help.

Yes. Our pacifiers are designed to fit the developmental growth stages of your baby. Your little one is growing the fastest in the first few years of life. The pacifier teat length and width of the different sizes fit the average growth measurements of the oral cavity during these developmental periods: newborn <2 months, 0-6 months, 6-18 months, and 18+ months.
The pacifier should fulfill the purpose of calming your baby. When the teat size fits properly in the mouth, is not too big and not too small, this provides better support for the natural suckling movements.
-
You can easily wash your pacifier holder with lukewarm soapy water and let it dry thoroughly.
We don't recommend the following methods to clean your pacifier holder to avoid weakening parts: boiling, steam sterilizing, cleaning in the washing machine or in the dishwasher.
-
Medela Baby packaging is recyclable, both the carton and the plastic blister and steribox are made of polypropylene.
Our one-piece pacifier, the SOFT SILICONE is fully made of silicone, it is recyclable and can be handed over to recycling centers where available.
Our other pacifiers (NEWBORN, ORIGINAL, and DAY & NIGHT) are made of 2 materials (PP and silicone teat) that are ultrasonically welded and not detachable to ensure your baby's safety. As they are not detachable, they are not recyclable.
-
The front knob of the pacifier contains a non-toxic fluorescent material that glows in the dark. It helps you and your little one to easily find the pacifier in the dark when they need comforting.
Place the pacifier for 3 minutes under a lamp or in a sunlit room to recharge it, but not in direct sunlight. The glow-in-the-dark effect should last approximately 8 hours, to reassure your little one through the night.
-
Requirements for pacifiers have been recommended by speech-language pathologists. The following features should be incorporated into a pacifier's design to help support the natural movement of the mouth muscles:¹
- Thin neck teat – minimizes the space between the upper and lower jaw
- Flat teat – takes up less space in the mouth allowing for more tongue movement
- Flexible and elastic teat – allows for additional tongue movement
- Lightweight – minimizes the work of the facial muscles
- Ergonomically shaped shield – fits the contour of the face and prevents pressure points

We recommend replacing pacifiers that are in daily use every 1–2 months, to ensure a safe, hygienic condition of the pacifier and help prevent any bacterial contamination.
Before each use, pull firmly on the teat and inspect it for tears or holes. Always replace the pacifier at the first sign of wear or damage.
Replace pacifiers immediately after your little one has had any infectious disease (e.g. a cold, stomach flu).
-
When a sterilization box is included with your pacifier, it can be used to sterilize your Medela Baby pacifier in the microwave.
Before use, remove any stickers from the box and wash the pacifier and box with warm water. Then follow these steps:
- Fill water up to the marker 10 ml/0.3 fl. oz for 1 pacifier or 25 ml/0.9 fl. oz for 2 pacifiers.2) Place the pacifier(s) in the box.
- Close the box and sterilize the soother for 3 minutes in the microwave (max. 1000W).
- Allow to cool for a minimum of 3 min before opening the sterilizing box.
- Squeeze out any residual water from the pacifier teat.
WARNING: Take extra care when handling and opening the sterilizing box. Hot steam from within the box can cause burns. Always check the temperature of the pacifier before use.
How often should I replace a pacifier?- Before its first use, boil the pacifier in hot water for 5 minutes. Allow it to cool thoroughly before giving it to your baby and squeeze out any residual water that may still be in the teat.
- We recommend cleaning the pacifier by washing it with warm water before every use.
- To ensure safety and good hygiene, sterilize the pacifier if it is heavily soiled or you live in a country in which water may be unsafe.
- Parents often decide to sterilize the pacifier more frequently in the first 3 months of life of their baby.
-
There is evidence that offering the pacifier at all sleep times can offer some protection against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Breastfed babies also have a reduced risk of SIDS.¹,² How a pacifier can reduce the risk of SIDS is still unclear. Safe infant sleep guidelines in various countries support the use of a pacifier during nap and bedtime in the first 6 months of life and often even up to one year of age. If the pacifier falls out of the mouth during sleep, you do not need to reinsert it.2 If your baby refuses the pacifier, do not force them to take it.
Two additional measures that can help reduce the risk of SIDS are to lay babies on their backs to fall asleep and to avoid putting pillows or stuffed toys in a baby's bed to prevent smothering or suffocation.2

Yes, the NIGHT pacifier is safe for your little one. The knob contains a non-toxic fluorescent material allowing it to glow in the dark.
-
The shape and features of a pacifier are very important to help support the oral development of your baby when it is used with purpose and responsibility. Speech-language pathologists recommend that pacifiers should have a symmetrical shape with a thin shaft and a flat teat, which takes up less space in the mouth allowing for more tongue movement.¹

No. All Medela Baby pacifier holders are tested according to the European EN12586 standard and are designed to ensure that they do not represent a safety risk to children. When used properly, pacifier holders can be very useful. They prevent pacifiers from getting dirty and thus ensure greater hygiene. The holders are especially helpful for mothers and babies on-the-go and should only be used during the daytime when your little one is awake and supervised.
-
No. The shape of Medela Baby pacifier shields has been designed according to the safety regulation EN 1400, which states how large the shield should be to prevent babies from swallowing their pacifiers. If at any time your baby should get the entire pacifier into the mouth, remain calm and gently remove the pacifier. There is no danger of choking because the air holes in the shield allow for a constant exchange of air.
-
At Medela Baby we want our products to help make every gesture more gentle, intimate, and assured. Baby skin is sensitive and we strive to make all our products gentle to the skin. SensoPearls™ are smooth little nubs on the inside of the shield of all our pacifiers. They are placed on the top and bottom of the shield to reduce – in addition to the air holes – the risk of redness and irritation on your little one's delicate skin.
-
Symmetrical teat means the teat has the same shape on the upper and lower part. A pacifier with a symmetrically formed teat is easily accepted, as it supports the natural physiological tongue, mouth, and facial muscle movements and the natural palate growth during this period of development.
-
There are different ways to sterilize or clean your pacifier.
1) To sterilize the pacifier you can:
- Boil the pacifier for 5 minutes in water. Allow it to cool thoroughly before giving it to your baby. If needed, squeeze out any water that may be left in the teat.
- Steam sterilize the pacifier in the microwave.
- If you have a microwave sterilizer, follow the instructions included by the manufacturer.
- If a Medela Baby pacifier Steribox is included with your pacifier, please follow the instructions for use detailed here.
- Use an electric steam sterilizer. Follow the instructions of your device to correctly sterilize the pacifier.
2) To clean a pacifier: Wash the pacifier with warm water.
Additional tips for pacifier safety and hygiene:- If the pacifier falls on the floor, avoid putting it in your mouth to clean it. You could transfer bacteria and viruses to your baby.
- Before each use, pull firmly on the teat and inspect it for tears or holes. Always replace the pacifier at the first sign of wear or damage.
- Replace pacifiers that are in daily use every 1–2 months.
- Replace pacifiers immediately if your baby has had any infectious disease (e.g. a cold, stomach flu).
- The protection cap and Steribox help keep the pacifier clean when out and about.
-
Any residual water can easily be removed by squeezing the teat. Allow the pacifier to cool before removing the water. If you boil the pacifier once per day, there is no risk of bacterial contamination even with residual water inside the teat.
-
Recommendations about when to stop using the pacifier vary greatly. Many children stop using the pacifier on their own or when they start eating solid foods. Other children have very strong desires to suckle for a longer period of time. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that weaning from a pacifier should start at the latest by 36 months.¹
Download our e-book 'Parent guide for pacifiers' to learn more about this journey and tips to help you go through weaning together.References:

Suckling is a natural reflex and is an innate need of most babies. They have a suck-swallow reflex when they are born and this is important for feeding. Suckling is also important to exercise their oral and facial muscles, which play a large role in speech development.
Babies often suckle to help calm themselves or fall asleep. Suckling occurs already in the womb when the fetus practices suckling on their hand or fingers.¹ A pacifier can help satisfy your baby's extra desire for suckling.
Parents have given their babies objects to suck on for centuries. Of course, today, pacifiers are more technologically advanced, light, flexible, and anatomically shaped to help prevent changes in teeth position when used responsibly.

Medela Baby ORIGINAL, DAY & NIGHT, and NEWBORN pacifiers have a valve to ensure optimal suckling comfort. Pacifier teats made of silicone remain soft and elastic to make sure gums and teeth do not sense excessive resistance. Any residual water in the teat after sterilizing or cleaning the pacifier can be removed easily just by squeezing the teat.
Our SOFT SILICONE pacifier teat is also soft and flexible. However, it doesn't have or need a valve because it is formed in one single piece.
-
At Medela Baby we want our products to help make every gesture more gentle, intimate, and assured. Baby skin is sensitive and we strive to make all our products as gentle to your little one's skin as possible. These holes together with our SensoPearls™ enhance airflow to avoid skin irritation and increase child safety.
Even in the unlikely event that your little one happens to get the whole pacifier into their mouth, the holes will allow air to flow. It is important not to block these air holes, for instance by attaching cords or ribbons as this might limit airflow.
-
Pacifiers with a ring are easier for parents and babies to hold onto and handy to use during the day.
Pacifiers without a ring are suitable for newborns and for falling asleep at any age. In these cases, a ring would probably be bothersome, for instance, if it is flipped up and pressing on your baby's nose. Not having a ring also avoids the pacifier from being pulled out of the mouth while actively moving during sleep or due to uncontrolled arm movement.

At this time Canadian customers are able to utilize the local blue box program. Medela products that come into direct contact with breast milk, such as breast shields, connectors, valves, membranes, bottles, and specialty feeding systems, as well as other products like tubing and cooling elements are all recyclable. The pump motor, carry bag & cooler bag can be discarded in your local trash collection.
Medela Canada is actively evaluating a program to recycle the remainder of the breast pump components in the future.
-
Pump in Style Advanced Backpack, On-the-go Tote, WIC and insurance breast pumps contain motors that are not intended to be removed from their bag. Please ship back the entire motor/bag configuration.
Pump in Style Advanced Metro, Freestyle & Swing breast pumps include carry bags that are separate from the breast pump motor. These bags do NOT need to be returned.

No, the bilibed is not for use in Incubators. The temperature control of the incubator may not be capable of compensating for the impact of the Bilibed. Increased humidity inside the incubator being applied for the treatment of the baby, may have a negative impact on the electric/electronic system of the Bilibed or even create an electrical shock hazard. If oxygen or other gases are used for the treatment of the baby inside the incubator, this may create a fire/explosion hazard.
-
No, the Bilimeter needs to be placed where the baby lays, so the baby must be removed.
-
The Medela Bilicombis are available for sale separately.
-
Medela does not offer a test meter. We recommend contacting Olympic Medical at 800-426-0353, they carry a product called a Bilimeter.
-
There is no need for eye patches, the light contacts only the baby's body. The Bilicombi properly positions the baby to the bed.
-
They must request an inservice from their Sales rep and have a RN degree.
-
The washable bilicombis should maintain their quality with more than 10 washings according to our recommended washing instructions. If they break down in less than 10 washings, please contact us.
-
It is recommended to change the light tube every 1500 hours.
-
Yes, the BiliBed is an FDA approved class II medical product.

Wash for Standard Machine cycle. Minimum wash cycle of 10 minutes is recommended. Machine wash in hot water. Minimum temperature 140 degrees F (60 degrees C). Maximum temperature 210 degrees F (95 degrees C). Standard detergent should be used. Use of chlorine bleach can cause color to bleed, fade and can reduce life of Bilicombi. Tumble dry low heat. If any of the Velcro fasteners show decreased adherence, or the light-permeable fabric is damaged/too stiff, a new Bilicombi should be used.
-
A Bilicombi is used to secure the baby to the Bilibed. Infants can be kept diapered and warm with the Bilicombi.
-
The Bilibed is a phototherapy system developed according to the latest medical findings for the treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (jaundice). Because the Bilibed can be fitted to most baby cribs and hospital bassinets, it is very suitable for hospital rooming in or home therapy. During treatment, the baby is wrapped in the Bilicombi blanket. Since baby is protected by the Bilicombi from spread light, there is no need for any inconvenient eye protection.
-

Rental - Symphony
-
Yes, the Symphony Protective Membrane can be boiled without harm.

You can view your Symphony Plus rental history if you rented your pump through Medela's exclusive rental partner, Breast Pump Rentals LLC. Click here to access the rental portal.
-
The Symphony automatically shuts off after 30 minutes with both battery and electric operation.
-
When the Symphony message reads, "invalid card" it could mean that the card in the pump is not the correct program card; the card could be damaged or the card is not inserted correctly.
Unplug the pump and remove the card. Check the card to make sure it is the correct card and also check for damage. Replace if necessary. Make sure the card is inserted in the direction of the arrows and the arrows are visible.
Plug in the pump and press the let-down button and the power button at the same time. Hold for several seconds and release. Try the pump again. If this does not correct the problem, the pump would need to be sent back the rental station for return to Medela.
-
The button all the way to the left is the on/off button. The knob in the center of the unit controls the suction and speed. The button all the way to the right is the "let down" button. This button interrupts the first phase (stimulation phase) so you can go right to the expression phase without waiting for the 2 minute stimulation phase to end.
-
Use the individual setting and press the "let-down" button to directly use the expression mode.
-
If the Symphony cover pops up while you are pumping, it may be due to an obstruction in the tubing.

Turn off the pump and unplug from the power source. Use a damp (not wet) cloth to wipe the motor and proceed as follows:
- Remove battery compartment cover from bottom of motor.
- Remove small, black foam piece from bottom of pump.
- Rinse the foam piece with clear lukewarm water, and squeeze out excess water. Allow to dry thoroughly before inserting back into pump.
- Pour about 2 ounces of warm soapy water into a container.
- Connect the tubing to the motor, leaving the other end unconnected.
- Connect the power cord to the motor, then plug into electrical outlet (do not power with battery).
- Hold the end of the tubing that is not connected to the pump in the container with the soapy water.
- Place the motor over a dry sink and switch on. The water will pump through the tubing into the motor and flow out through the opening beneath the battery cover. Allow it to pump until all the water has been flushed through.
- Repeat this procedure again with 2 ounces of warm clear water.
- Leave the motor switched on for an additional 3 minutes so it dries completely.
- As soon as the foam piece is dry, put it in place again, and re-install the battery compartment cover.
- If necessary, clean the pump kit according to cleaning instructions.

Specialty Feeding
-
The tubings from the SNS should not be cleaned in the Micro-Steam bags. It is recommended to clean tubes by flushing with hot, soapy water and rinse.
-
Yes, the vent is needed to allow air into the bottle when fluid is removed.
-
After each use:
1. Fill container full of warm soapy water and force water through tubing, teat and disc/membrane assembly by squeezing teat (making sure disc/membrane assembly is inside teat lid while cleaning).
2. Refill with clean water and again force water through tubing, teat and disc/membrane assembly.
3. Squeeze the empty teat a few times to remove water droplets from the tubings.
4. Completely disassemble and clean remaining parts with soapy water. Squeeze teat tubing assembly until the disc/membrane assembly falls out. Use fingernail of forefinger and thumb to remove membrane from disc.
5. Rinse well and drain dry on a clean towel.
6. Reassemble
-
The system can be primed by squeezing feed from the container into the tubing. Release only one side of the tubing at a time from the attachment ring when feeding the baby. Gently tickle the babies lip with the nipple and tube.
-
The easiest way to change the flow is using the different sizes of tubing. The small tubing has a red valve, the medium has a white valve, and the large has a clear valve. The flow can also be adjusted by the height the system is worn. When the bottom of the SNS container is above the level of the nipple, the feed will flow more quickly. When the SNS is placed below the level of the nipple, the feed will flow slowly. The flow can be increased by gently squeezing the SNS container while the baby is feeding. Warming the feed can increase the flow.
-
The large tubing is 0.85mm in diameter and has a clear top.
The medium tubing is 0.75mm in diameter and has a white top.
The small tubing is 0.65mm in diameter and has a red top.
-
Breastmilk is the preferred nutrition for babies. Clinicians may recommend other fluids, fortifiers and/or medications to meet the baby's medical and nutritional needs.
-
The tubing should extend about a ¼" beyond the nipple. The tube should be in the center of the upper lip of the baby and not off to the sides. Reposition the baby if there is no flow. Reposition the tubing if there is no flow. Make sure the tubing is not crimped.
-
The SNS tubing is made of Silicone.
-
The SNS was developed to allow the baby that is not getting enough nourishment at the breast to receive extra feed or supplements while remaining at the breast. Adoptive mothers often use the product to help re-lactate or for the bonding experience the system can provide between mother and baby. The SNS should be used on the recommendation of a lactation consultant or physician.
Storage Bags
-
- It is normal for pumped milk to vary in color and consistency depending on your diet.
- Store your milk in Medela's BPA-free breast milk collection bottles or in storage bags specifically designed for breast milk, such as Medela's Pump & Save™ bags.
-
The Pump and Save bags are made of an outer layer of PET and an inner layer of LDPE Film.
Tubing
-
Inspect tubing after each pumping session. Tubing should be washed if dirty or milk is present. Cleaning tubing is NOT necessary if condensation inside the tube is from previous washings or atmospheric conditions.
CAUTION: If tubing becomes moldy, discontinue use and replace tubing.
CAUTION: Do not store wet or damp parts as mold may develop.
NOTE: Tubing should be washed if dirty or milk is present. Follow your breast pump instructions on tubing care for cleaning and drying.

-
No, the Pump in Style with MaxFlow Breast Pump Replacement Tubing was designed to ONLY be used with the PersonalFit Flex connectors for optimal and safe pump performance.
-
Cleaning of the tubing is only necessary if condensation is present in the tubing. For full cleaning instructions, please refer to your breast pump's instruction manual.
-
Pump in Style with MaxFlow has unique parts and was designed to be a closed system at the kit, which means its tubing is designed to work with PersonalFit Flex Connectors only. Using your Symphony kit with Pump in Style MaxFlow will cause milk back-up into the tubing and result in irreversible damage to your pump.
-
We recently made a minor update to the tubing adapter, but not to worry, this doesn't affect the performance and you can use either tubing interchangeably, they both work.
